An uplifting adventure tale about an African girl who transcends societal norms, expectations and restrictions.

Amani, an African girl child who lives in Kampala, dares to dream. When she tells people that she wants to be a boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) rider, everyone laughs. But, through the support of her grandfather and grandmother, Amani defies all limitations and ultimately is successful, travelling all over Uganda with her precious cargo.

Amani the Boda-Boda Rider taught me that girls can be anything in life. My favorite part was when Amani learned how to ride a boda-boda. I think other kids would like this book because it teaches more about equality.”

“These stories are incredible. The literature is localised and anyone from East Africa will wear a smile while reading it. They are simple to read and so inspirational!”

– Zaharah Namanda, Africa Education & Leadership Initiative, Uganda

Amani the Boda-Boda Rider is my favourite. Like the other books in the set it undermines gender stereotypes. Because of its format and language it is likely to be accessible to beginner readers, but the story and the complexity and sensitivity with which the author treats a complex topic (the intersection of gender rights with cultural and religious norms) makes the subject matter interesting for children from 6 to 12 years old.”
